Drawing during a sermon

I went to church with a Bible and a sketchpad today. I thought I'd see what would happen. I like to doodle during church anyway, so I thought, why not see how I respond to the sermon and the Word in worship with a sketchpad. I want to be a part of a visual arts ministry, so why not get going? The sermon was on Philippians 3:1-11. Pastor Jonathan contrasted the legalist and the grace-filled person. So, I did a quick sketch of the legalist, the guy who has the list of dos and don'ts. And he is making sure you are keeping the list. Or not. Funny thing is, where did this guy's list come from? His own small, critical, bitter heart. His pride. He has put himself in the place of God. By the way, you'll never measure up to his expectations. Here is the sketch:

He is actually standing near some fire. Hmmmm. Will that list catch on fire? Who wants to be around this guy anyway?

Then the pastor talked about grace. Salavation is a free gift from God through Jesus' act of love and grace. He took on our sin, and He gave us His righteousness. We humbly come to God and thank Him, boasting in nothing but what He has done for us. I have given up the inferior stuff of my list for myself and others, so I can know Jesus personally. But, a relationship with Jesus isn't necessarily easy at all. There was mention of being a partner in suffering. Well, why?

Well, partially because people would rather have lists, so grace-filled people are going to come against people who say it's not grace, or a free gift, and NOT nothing can separate me from the love of Jesus. You have to hang tough when a listkeeper is about. Talk about serious gravity!

Not one person's list, no schemes, bittterness, pride or abuse can separate me from God's grace when trusting Christ. Drop my pride, drop to my knees, receive His love, grace, forgiveness, mercy, and follow Jesus through the suffering. ........I don't know......it's just a sketch.
