Worship in spirit and in truth.

Sometimes, the only thing that helps me wipe away my tears and the cold, sobering memories of betrayal, infidelity and abuse is to paint. OK, OK, no one really wants to read a blog starting out like this. But, I imagine you have had a betrayal, meanness or sorrow or loss that cuts deeply into your bones and heart in your life as well. And, you have found art or music, dance or drama has soothed your soul. The arts take the edge off the sharpness of life. But, is it more than that? Is it not only comfort to the soul, but also worship?

Someone once said that worshipping God in spirit was done through the arts. The Holy Spirit, with our spirit, making or enjoying art in us. Could artists actually enter into honoring, worshipping and serving God when making art? What an amazing thought! I am communing with Him when I paint, dance, sing, write or act. Think about an amazing piece of art or music that has impacted you and drawn you closer to God. In the same way, the artist is drawn closer to God, feels His presence, in the creation process. I do.

God says we are to worship "in spirit and in truth". I understand worshipping God in truth is through the proclamation and study of the Word, the Bible or in finding the truths in the created world. I used to have to be right about my every interpretation of scripture. I thought I had the corner on perfecto interpretation. (Who in the world did I think I was?)I'm created, not the creator:-) Now I am worshipping God each night by painting. Not perfectly, but that's OK. I am loved and graced by an amazing God. And He has given me the priviledge of worshipping Him, however humanly, when I paint.

I'm off to do it. I'll try to post a picture in a bit. OK, below is the window. It will be in the afternoon, so it is hot, but restful. To be continued.
