I was thinking about a husband and wife tonight. This man's wife had a "handicap" in that she came into the marriage with a problem. Not that he didn't have his own baggage, but her problem was more obvious and stickier. His problems were deeper, under wraps. He had hesitated on marrying her just to keep his life simple, less messy. She'd bring shame to him. It would be easier not to care for a wife with this problem. It was scary. It was complicated. Maybe she brought it on herself, was to blame.
However, this husband was in tune that his life was in God's hands. He had good character. He loved God. But the wife, with her problem, didn't seem like she had a real relationship with God; the evidence was stacked against her. He wanted to think the best of her in spite of the problem, but really. He prayed about the situation.
Don't be afriad was what God said. Don't be afraid. God said, "Don't hesitate" to take the problem woman to be his wife and care for the problem. Don't walk away, but toward the problem. It is a boulder, not a backpack, and she needs your love and grace. She needs extra special care and you are the one to do it. I'll help you.
God's words gave Joseph courage.
"Joseph, son of David, don't hesitate to get married. Mary's pregnancy is Spirit-conceived. God's Holy Spirit has made her pregnant. She will bring a son to birth, and when she does, you, Joseph, will name him Jesus—'God saves'—because he will save his people from their sins." - Matthew chapter 1.
And so Joseph and Mary were married.
I am going to sketch them. I forgot my camera at school, so here is a quick video.
